What are the benefits of SURAfund for startup companies?
Startup companies will find multiple benefits to participation, including:

  • First and foremost, the opportunity to obtain private sector funding for your startup company
  • Mini-business plan review and mentoring from SURA and our network of investors
  • Connections to other firms and researchers working in similar market or technology spaces
  • Connections to an extensive network of experience entrepreneurs and skilled business and technical advisors
How can I participate if I am an interested startup company?
Any startup company who meets these criteria is invited to participate:
  • No prior institutional investments (university, SBIR, and friends/family funding acceptable)
  • Protected/licensed intellectual property for a breakthrough technology
  • Scientists/researchers engaged (but full management team not required)
  • Some connection to a SURA university (e.g., licensed technology, researchers involved, sharing facilities, etc.)

There is no fee for startups to submit a plan. Companies agree to pay a minimal reimbursement fee to SURA in the event that a funding event occurs with one of our VC Partner Firms as a result of this program. This fee will be built into the closing costs of the deal and will be negotiated prior to closing. Our VC Partners agree that this fee is appropriate to cover SURA's administrative costs of running the program.

Please see the simple submission guidelines for details on how to submit via email or online. Quarterly solicitations are issued for specific technology areas, but submissions are also accepted on an ongoing basis.

For more information regarding how to join participate in the SURAfund initiative, please contact Marc Oettinger at or 202-253-7697.
