SURA regularly sponsors well-received and timely discipline-specific workshops and conferences for the benefit of the SURA research and education community. These workshops offer the opportunity for improved communication and awareness among those who are working on similar and relevant topics in related fields. In addition, SURA workshops often serve as a catalyst for the formation of inter-institutional or even regional collaborations and application-specific project development. Workshops and conferences developed each year under the umbrella of the SURA IT Initiative are a complement to both the current program and the exploration of future directions.

As a member of the Partnership for Advanced Computing Services (PACS), SURA also offers workshops in collaboration with NCSA within the NSF-funded Partnership for Advanced Computing Infrastructure (PACI) program. As part of this partnership, SURA has developed and co-sponsored several IT-related workshops that were offered to SURA members along with members of other higher education and research institutions outside of the SURA community.
