NEWS

- - New SURAgrid Members - -

Welcome to the following new SURAgrid members: Stephen F. Austin State University, TX and Wake Forest University. If you use the SURAgrid map (http://sura.org/programs/sura_grid.html) in your presentations and reports, it’s time to download a new one that includes these two institutions.

- - New SURAgrid Application - -

University of Delaware is in the process of deploying a climate modeling application on SURAgrid.  University of Delaware is currently running the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM3) on a department Linux box which is a single processor 1.5 GHz box. One year of model output from the CAM takes approximately 5-6 days real time. The use of a multi-processor machine will greatly broaden the scope of the study and allow for the use of an additional model called the Slab Ocean Model (SOM). Most of the improvement in calculation time would come from the ability to implement multi-processor capabilities. These models are already optimized to work in a parallel environment on IBM SP-family computers and are poised to become the first applications deployed on the IBM P5 systems recently added to the SURAgrid resource pool and purchased via the SURA-IBM partnership. For more information on the SURA-IBM partnership, visit http://sura.org/programs/sura_grid.html.

- - TeraGRID07 Proceedings - -

TeraGRID07 was held June 4 – 6, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus.  SURAgrid was represented in the poster session by SURA IT staff and Steve Johnson of TAMU. The conference theme was broadening participation, and there were a number of provocative and interesting keynote talks. TeraGRID07 webcasts are now available. Visit rtsp://ici.sdsc.edu/tg07.sdp for keynotes, invited talks, and plenary sessions and rtsp://ici.sdsc.edu/tg07impct.sdp for science impact track sessions.

SURAgrid Support

Are you a new SURAgrid participant or just someone who’s forgotten about all the ways you can seek help, advice, or share information? SURAgrid has three listservs available to active participants.  The main project list, suragrid@sura.org, is for general sharing of information and SURAgrid conference call reminders and notes.  For grid implementation and resource deployment questions, try suragrid-support@sura.org.  You are almost always guaranteed quick responses, good discussion, and a variety of solutions.  Try using the applications deployment and support list suragrid-apps@sura.org, if you need some guidance on grid-enabling your application. Each listserv has a searchable archive organized by date, so you can benefit from prior discussions.

If you just want to catch up on what’s going on in SURAgrid, check out the SURAgrid communications page (http://sura.org/programs/sura_grid_communications.html) for meeting notes, presentations, and back issues of the SURAgrid Update.  As we grow, we will improve our capabilities so your feedback on all of our current communication tools is welcome. Just send your comments to Linda Akli (akli@sura.org).

FUNDING Opportunities

The primary purpose of the Strategic Technologies for Cyberinfrastructure Program (STCI) is to support work leading to the development and/or demonstration of innovative cyberinfrastructure services for science and engineering research and education that fill gaps left by more targeted funding opportunities. Proposals are due August 9, 2007 and SURA is developing additional ideas for overall SURAgrid support. For more information, go to   http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=500066&org=NSF&sel_org=NSF&from=fund.

A solicitation for a third round of funding for the NSF Cyberinfrastructure Training, Education, Advancement, and Mentoring (CI-TEAM) Program was issued with proposals due August 27, 2007. SURA encourages you to think creatively about ways to leverage SURAgrid in CI-TEAM proposals, particularly for outreach & training, or as a testbed for extending CI capabilities to new communities. Contact Gary Crane with your ideas for collaboration at gcrane@sura.org. For more information about CI-TEAM, see http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07564/nsf07564.htm.

If you have an existing grant, NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) grants (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07569/nsf07569.htm) are a great way of funding student’s to work on your grid implementation and grid-enabling projects.  REU Site proposals are due September 13, 2007. Contact your current grant program officer about supplements.

UPCOMING Events

The deadline for submitting poster sessions and demonstrations for GRID2007 has been extended to July 27, 2007. The conference will be held September 19 - 22 in Austin, TX. See http://www.grid2007.org for more information.

Remember to mark your calendar for the upcoming SURAgrid Fall meeting to be held Sep 26 – 28 at SURA Headquarters in Washington, DC. Please provide agenda suggestions to Mary Fran Yafchak at maryfran@sura.org.

Brag a bit and let us know where you’re exhibiting, presenting talks or workshops. This way we can leverage our collective SURAgrid resources, facilitate face-to-face meeting opportunities, and support each other’s presentations/workshops at these events. Send your upcoming events to Linda Akli at akli@sura.org for inclusion in the newsletter and posting on the SURA and SURAgrid websites.
