Jefferson Lab: Free Electron Laser

Using superconducting radiofrequency (srf) technology, Jefferson Lab built and now operates the world’s most powerful tunable laser, known as the Jefferson Lab Free Electron Laser (FEL). The JLab FEL has been recently upgraded to enable output power of 10 kilowatts and is already being used to explore applications in science, industry and national defense.

From cancer detection and prevention to high-speed data processing to homeland security, the potential value of technology from member universities and Jefferson Lab is tremendous. Through its technology commercialization program, SURA actively pursues the application of these technologies to meeting the needs of the marketplace, ultimately resulting in products that enhance US competitiveness and benefit society.
