Inside SURA IT: IT Project Proposal Procedures

The SURA IT program provides a mechanism to engage SURA's own IT expertise and the expertise of its member institutions to best take advantage of IT opportunities that require quick decision making. The IT strategy formulated for SURA by the SURA IT Committee recognizes that, first and foremost, the mission of SURA must be supported. In addition, the IT strategy calls for leveraging information technology in ways that create competitive advantage for member institutions as they pursue the federal research dollars needed to establish excellence in scientific research.

The SURA IT Committee identified the following four focus areas for SURA sponsored IT initiatives:
Sponsorship of collaborative initiatives

  • Support for the development of "middleware" and applications that enable science
  • Regional information technology infrastructure development
  • Position SURA to influence national IT and networking agenda
Under the guidance of the SURA IT Committee, SURA will pursue the above focus areas first in the form of projects that are initiated by the IT Committee itself and recognized as being central to the realization of broad regional goals. In addition, the SURA IT Committe will consider support for collaborative IT projects as proposed by SURA member institutions. The following are the criteria used by the IT Steering Group in considering proposals for funding from the IT Initiatives Fund:
  1. The proposal should be clearly in support of the SURA IT strategy, and should relate to SURA initiatives.
  2. The proposal should show some evidence of institutional (administrative) buy-in.
  3. Proposals should show evidence of attempts to leverage other resources or funding.
  4. Results of sponsored work should be widely distributable to SURA members, allowing for due consideration of intellectual property concerns. A plan for dissemination of results should be included.
  5. Greatest consideration will be given to proposals that involve faculty and researchers from multiple SURA institutions.
  6. Proposals should identify at least one supporting IT Committee member who will bring the proposal foward to the larger IT Committee for discussion/presentation on the IT Committee discussion list or at an IT Committee quarterly meeting.
